Description Maigonis Daga was born in 1923 in Latvia, Eastern Europe and immigrated to Australia in 1948 after the end of WWII, just before Latvia joined the Soviet Union. Maigon attended the famous Adelaide School of Art where he learned sculpture and studio ceramics. After perfecting his craft Maigon graduated and established his own studio pottery business in 1954. Daga kept glazing and finishing simple, whilst he worked in Australia. Earth toned or a well blended palate was Maigon’s signature. In 1964 Maigon relocated to America, where he worked from home until opening a new studio pottery business in 1970. Daga Design Studio was in Minneapolis. During the 1970’s Maigon undertook commissioned work, with a focus on increasing the popularity of his studio work. During the 1980’s Daga returned to his love of form, function and design. He began creating animal forms on decorative plinths – often granite. Almost all Maigon’s art works are incised on the base with his surname Daga. Maigon died in 2001. He left behind a legacy of studio art pottery that is natural, modernist & rustic. This large bird on a base of driftwood was created during Daga’s time in Australia, during the 1950’s. Driftwood measures approximately 25cm in length.
