Two dolly switches on a Georgian style plate made from solid brass with a Polished Brass Unlacquered finish.The Georgian style of plate is characterized by the rope detailing around the edge that is associated with this particular period and architectural style. This design can also be found in other architectural items from the period such as door furniture and lighting. It is a quality, heavy cast plate that also has a practical advantage of being slightly larger than some other plate styles (whilst still fitting to a standard back box) so can be useful to cover up messy plastering around the plate edge.Unlacquered polished brass is a living finish that will mellow over time. To start with it is bright and shiny, but it will age and develop a rich dark patina that has lighter areas where it is handled. It can be left to age like this indefinitely or can be polished with a metal polish to restore to bright and shiny as new. Leaving the plates to age naturally is a popular choice in period and traditional settings as the characterfulness can be more in keeping. They are available as 2 Way or Intermediate. A 2 way switch is suitable for lights that only require switching from up to 2 places, whereas the intermediate switch would be required if the light is to be operated from more than 2 places (for example in hallways and on landings).
