To start with it is bright and shiny, but it will age and develop a rich dark patina that has lighter areas where it is handled. It can be left to age like this indefinitely or can be polished with a metal polish to restore to bright and shiny as new. Leaving the plates to age naturally is a popular choice in period and traditional settings as the characterfulness can be more in keeping.
